Maruti Suzuki's sales grew by more than 20%; Mahindra's sales decline by 10%


MG Motor India reported 33 per cent growth with sales of 4,010 units
Mahindra registers 25% growth in farm equipment with 22,417 units




The year 2020 has been bad for auto makers. The auto industry was in a slump due to the epidemic. However, over time the sector improved and returned to normal. Even in December 2020, the companies have achieved good sales figures. Mahindra & Mahindra Pharma Equipment grew by 25 per cent.



1. Maruti sold a total of 1,60,226 units, registering a growth of 20.2%

Maruti Suzuki India Limited sold a total of 1,60,226 units of compact vehicles, led by LCV and van, in December 2020. The country's largest automaker said in a statement that it was 20.2 per cent higher than 1,33,296 units sold in the same month last year.

Domestic sales rose 19.5 per cent to 1,50,288 units and exports rose 31.4 per cent to 9,938 units.

Maruti Suzuki grew its sales by 13.4% to 4,95,897 units in the third quarter of the current financial year.

2. Mahindra & Mahindra - 23 per cent growth in domestic sales with 21,173 units






The automotive division of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd reported a 10.3 per cent decline in sales in December 2020 to 35,187 units, compared to 39,230 units in the same period last year.

Total passenger vehicle sales grew by 3 per cent to 16,182 units, while exports grew by 3 per cent to 2,210 units.



Vijay Nakra, Chief Executive, Mahindra Automotive Division, said, “Our overall sales have been affected due to supply chain challenges related to the ever-changing global situation, especially the decline in supply of microprocessors (semiconductors) used in electronic control units.

The farm equipment segment, on the other hand, saw a 25 per cent growth in sales of 22,417 units in December 2020 as against 17,991 units in the same period last year.

Domestic sales were up 23 per cent at 21,173 units, while exports rose 60 per cent to 1,244 units.

3. Escorts report highest December sales



Escorts Ltd's agricultural machinery segment sold a total of 7,733 tractors in December with a growth of 88%, the highest ever recorded in a month. The company had sold a total of 4,114 tractors during the same period last year.

Domestic tractor sales grew 90% year-on-year with 7,230 units, while exports reached 503 units with 63.3% growth.

4. MG Motors achieved 33% growth in December



MG Motor India has achieved 33% growth with sales of 4010 units, while the company sold a total of 3021 units during the same period last year.

The company sold 3430 hectares of SUVs, 458 Gloucester SUVs and 112 ZS electric vehicles last month.

5. Tata Motors grew by 84%

Tata sold a total of 23,546 units in December, up 9 per cent from 21,640 units last month in November 2020.

Compared to December 2019, Tata recorded a huge growth of 84%, as only 12,785 units were sold in December 2019.

The brand ranks third in terms of sales compared to Mahindra, Kia, Renault, Honda and Toyota.

Its market share was 8.5 per cent in 2019, compared to 5.4 per cent during the month.

6. Hyundai recorded a growth of 25%




Hyundai was also in second place last month in terms of sales. The company sold a total of 47,400 units in December 2020. It recorded a growth of 25 per cent. The company had sold 37,953 units during the same period last year.

As of November 2020, the company had sold a total of 48,800 units. It was down 3 percent on an annual basis. The company had a market share of 17.1% in December 2020.

7. 3% decrease in sales of VECV




According to the Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicle (VECV), sales in December 2020 fell 3% to 4,892 units. The company sold 5,042 vehicles in December last year.

Sales of Volvo's vehicles declined due to low domestic demand, although sales of its vehicles in overseas markets increased by 23.6 per cent.
