When our mind is completely stable and focused, only then its energetic power is fully energized and spent in doing auspicious and excellent work. The stability of the mind and the grace of all the senses is called self-restraint in the scriptures.

To understand self-restraint in a more simple sense, it is that following all the senses, following the best path is self-restraint.  Both visual and sensory senses are the two major and primary senses of the human body.  Those who have subdued these two, the rest of the senses are automatically subdued.

rishyendri means eye and णrāveendri means ear.  When we see the good things of the world with our eyes, then we hear the good things with our ears.  Visual and hearing have a profound impact on human life.

If someone plays the biggest role in building our personality, then it is with these two senses.  What did we see ..?  And what did we hear ..?  Our personality is focused on these two things.

Seeing the best with eyes, listening to the best with the ears, singing the best with the hands, singing the best with the speech, contemplating the best with the intellect and seeking the best with the mind, this is called self-restraint in our scriptures.  In the simplest sense, the acceptance of only and only the best by all our senses is self-restraint.
