Rajmata Scindia's life was all about Jan Seva: PM Modi releases ₹100 coin in honour of Vijaya Raje

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today released a commemorative coin of ₹100 in honour of Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia, through a virtual ceremony. The special coin minted by the Ministry of Finance is being released in celebration of her birth centenary.

"We learn from the life of #RajmataScindia that one does not have to be born in a big family to serve others. All that is needed is love for the nation and a democratic temperament: PM Modi," Office of the Prime Minister of India tweeted.

"The life and work of #RajmataScindia was always connected to the aspirations of the poor. Her life was all about Jan Seva: PM Modi," PMO Office said in another tweet.

She was a Jana Sangh leader and one of the founding members of the BJP.

"Tomorrow, 12th October is the Jayanti of Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia. On this special day, commemorative coin of ₹100 would be released at 11 AM. This is a part of her birth centenary celebrations and is yet another occasion to pay tributes to her great personality," Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier tweeted

Coming from a royal family, Scindia was one of the major faces of the saffron party and vocal proponent of its core Hindutva issues.

She was born on October 12, 1919. Her daughter Vasundhara Raje and grandson Jyotiraditya Scindia are senior BJP leaders.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday released a commemorative coin of Rs 100 on the birth centenary of Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia. The PM recalled the legacy of the royal and paid his respects to her. Speaking at a virtual ceremony, PM Modi lauded Rajmata Scindia for dedicating her life to poor people. The special coin minted by the Ministry of Finance is being released in celebration of her birth centenary.

Vijaya Raje Scindia was "a witness to India's key political events from independence struggle to decades after the country's independence", PM Modi said. "In the last 60 years, Rajmata Scindia was one of the key political figures who showed the direction. She was a decisive leader and an able administrator. From burning of foreign clothes before the independence to Ram Mandir Andolan, her experience had been vast," he stressed.

"It's so wonderful that the Ramjanmabhoomi that she struggled for, that dream too has been realised in the year that marks her birth centenary," PM Modi said at a virtual ceremony held to release a commemorative coin.

"She proved that service of public (Jan Satta) is more important than holding on to power (Raj Satta). She was a royal yet she spent important years of her life in prison. During Emergency, she wrote a letter to her daughters," PM Modi shared.

Recalling the contents of the letter, the Prime Minister said she gave a key lesson that the "future generations should be able to draw an inspiration as we make sacrifices while dealing with our current struggles".

Earlier this year, Vijaye Raje Scindia's grandson - Jyotiraditya Scindia - had ended his decades long association with the Congress to join the BJP.

BJP MLA Yashodhara Raje- Vijay Raje Scindia's daughter and Jyotiraditya Scindia's aunt - had praised Mr Scindia for a step "taken in (the) national interest" and called it a "ghar wapsi (homecoming)". "This is ghar wapsi (home-coming). The way he has been welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah shows their respect towards Rajmata (Vijaya Raje Scindia)," she had told reporters.
