NASA says that the crack in the glacier had been visible since 2001, and that its polar-orbiting Aqua satellite had observed the break on July 16-17. On July 15/16 2012, a 130 km2 (50 square-miles) chunk calved from the northern tip of the glacier.

The river, scientists claim, was formed nearly 1.8 and 3.5 million years ago and contained fresh water with elements not very different from that of Earth rivers. The presence of such a huge river on Mars might spark of rumours of life on the now-dry planet and re-ignite scientists’ hope of sustaining life forms on Mars in the future.
